Alan Mallach is a senior fellow at the Center for Community Progress in Washington, DC. He is the author of many works on housing and planning, including Bringing Buildings Back and Building a Better Urban Future: New Directions for Housing Policies in Weak Market Cities. He has served as director of housing and economic development for Trenton, N.J. as a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, and as a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

Escaping Climate Change? Not So Simple

Trying to predict how different US cities will be affected by climate change is something like trying to predict the movement of a single molecule in a sea of Brownian motion. Not only are the direct impacts of climate change complex, and not limited to hotter temperatures and higher sea levels, but any prediction needs to take account not only the gradual unfolding of change over time, and the considerable adaptability of human beings and their institutions.
